3-1 Win over the Renegades.

They played the only way they could against us, "The Rope-a-Dope" and it worked for at least one goal. Other than that, they simply couldn't get out of their end, and if not for their goalie this would have been another blow-out.

We were a little too aggressive and invited a couple of break-aways, but other than that we simply threw a blanket over them, and they had nowhere to go. Christian is off next two weeks so I may get a sub goalie to play, and I will play D in his spot.

8-1 Win Over the Wolves.

Oddly, the Wolves showed up with a better team this game, albeit with a newbie goalie. The Vikings also showed up with a better team... we just simply over-powered these guys as everyone got in on the scoring. They did bring out at least one new player with some talent, but he was only good enough to score one goal late in the game. I hope these teams get better as it seems we are down here for awhile longer.

Really strong game though kids, as we really didn't give them any breathing room and we played strong ALL 3 periods.

6-1 Win over the Angry Pirates

Great game today as we powered back from 2 previous games without a win. Even as they held a 1-0 lead it was clear we were going to take this team, as they seemed just a notch above beginner and could not develop quality scoring chances. You guys worked hard in deep, had very strong play on the wings, and as well - a smothering defense.

I hope we get a good turn-out for the practice session as I feel it will be valuable and a lot of fun for two hours, then some quality beer time. I am sure we can use this opportunity to work on our passing, positioning, and special teams. Sean is a really good teacher and you guys will def get your money's worth.

2 hour Practice session.

Hey Gang. This is from Sarah. She is really doing a lot to make this happen, so if you can make this session it would be much appreciated. We have always talked about a "practice" and this our chance. Besides that, it should be a fun night that includes scrimmage, two goalies, a great teacher, and a beer or two afterwards.

Subject: Organized Practice and Pickup - Can you provide input today?

Hey Beavs and Vikings,

Marty and I are sending this email out to determine the amount of interest that there will be in participating in an organized practice and how much you would be willing to pay.

We can set up a 1.5 “official” practice with Sean from Sparkles hockey. Sean is a qualified hockey instructor who has been running hockey clinics for years. He has graciously agreed to organize a practice (drills ect) for us to help us with our positioning and to get us working on setting up systems. We want to book the ice for 2 hours – have a 1.5 hour practice and then 30 min of pick-up.

This would be good for the Beavers as we’re a new team and need to work on creating systems (break-out plays ect). The Vikings – well you guys did tie the Dragons and lose to the Stars …so you guys need help. Kidding kidding. I miss you guys ;o) Marty and I thought that it would be good to do the practice with both teams.

Here’s what we need from you (today if possible as we have ice waiting to be booked):

  1. Would you be willing to pay $30 (this would be for the practice and 2 hours of ice time) – this assumes we get 20 players
  2. Does Friday October 24th from 7:15pm to 9:15pm work for you (the arena is at Avenue and St.Clair)

Your input is appreciated – we will book the ice tonight if we get enough confirmations. Sean has already confirmed this date – we just need to ensure we have enough commitment.

Thanks guys,
Sarah

4-1 Loss to the Stars

Well this division isn't going to be the "stroll in the park" we were thinking after our first two games. We really didn't help our cause too much, as I think we can all agree we can play better. Surprisingly, the Stars deserved the win as they did all their goals even if they were all fluky.

Our "team" game was off today even though we played them stride for stride. They worked hard and we got to give them that, but we will beat this team more often than not, on any game day. Let's pick it up and get back on track next week with a full turnout, improved break-outs, and getting a player to the front of their net.

Looks like we are in the right division after all.

3-3 TIE vs. Dragons

A much tougher game against the Dragons.

They are obviously trying to stay in the lowest level, as all of their shooters and strong D came out to play against us, where the week before they were HALF the team. They kind of did us favour in showing some weak spots we might have to work on, but we still showed more grit, skating control, and temperament against (as always) an over anxious team. Nice work on the comeback gang. Sophie finally came out to play with a great big smile and a few shots too.

As I shook hands with the Dragons, their droopy faces meant they really wanted to beat us, and that like most other teams, they just didn't have as fun much as we did.

5-0 win over the Renegades

These guys were actually better than the Wolves but it was really no contest again. You guys smothered their attack, even on their power-plays. James made like Sean Avery, scoring and warming the penalty box. Get this guys we have set a True North record for the team MOST penalized for throwing pucks on the ice while the Zamboni gate is open... 3 TIMES!! ;-) That is actually about the only thing to complain about as I feel we played much better our second game as opposed to our season opener. Great game guys and lotsa fun today.

We howl in a 2-0 win to start the winter season.

These Wolves were gentle, and although we weren't at our sharpest, they really didn't stand a chance against our solid work ethic and intense zone play. Mark scores, Paul J and James almost scored. Christian missed this game due to flu and we are still awaiting the arrival of Sophie Bourque (from the Daley Byers) and the return Eric Pierni, C.

If the rest of our competition is like the Wolves, we should be thinking of moving up a division when re-alignment happens. Another fine effort gents, but please no more defensive pinching when protecting a shout out with SECONDS TO GO!!! (ouch)

The new Viking 'C'

Well Vikings, we had a great run this summer which culminated with a championship win. We really were the underdogs with a 1-5 start and a 0-4 record against the Byers. But with hard work and perserverance we are the CHAMPS!!!!! I personally could not have asked for a better bunch of gals and guys as teammates to end my 3 year hockey playing sabbitical.

Although it is highly irregular for a championship team, our Captain has decided that he wants to pass the 'C' on for the coming season. I know my fellow blue liner Shaggy (Christian) is wary of offending the hockey gods but I seem to recall at least a couple of emails from James wanting to pass it on. To James we thank you for acting as Viking Captain for the summer season. To the hockey gods I'll apologize but really, I'm not a religious man so the heck with it.

I'll start the nominations and give the nod to Graham #9.

Any other nominations, suggestions, comments, blog it up.

Claude makes a slide show of pics.

Thanks for this Claude and Tania. Much appreciated.

Rogers Cable CSR

I recently dropped both of my phones (couples plan) from Rogers and switched to Virgin Mobile as I felt Rogers was gouging me. It cleared up so much room from my Rogers bill I decided to phone them today and actually ADD something.

An HDPVR is like TiVO. You can watch all the digital tier channels but do instant recording by downloading and scheduling your favorite shows onto the receiver. Its really convenient and soooo much easier than using tapes or CDs to record. When you are done watching something you just delete it. It can hold about 40 movies or so I think.

So that one is on my main TV upstairs and the girls and I watch all our fav shows up there, but when I am in the office downstairs, I use the "old" style digital receiver that allows you to see all the digital tier channels but just doesn't record anything. But I often want to record hockey, movies, Mad Men, Poker After Dark and World Poker Tour reruns so I called Rogers to ask how much they would charge me for an additional HDPVR for downstairs.

I found out I was paying 24.99/month for the HDPVR rental upstairs and only 4.95/month for the digital receiver downstairs. Quite a difference, and I let the CSR guy know I was disappointed at how much difference there was. I then started saying I have to look closer at my whole Rogers bill because after the cell phone gouging, I thought I should get a better deal.

The CSR then says "let me look at your account". Then he states instead of the regular digital receiver at $4.95, he can give me a current promotion for a new HDPVR where I get it FREE for 2 years!

What? uhhh... Ok, duh!

I held back from shouting - "WHY THE HELL DIDN'T YOU OFFER ME THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE?" because I was scared he could somehow revoke the offer of killing my current fee of $4.95 and replacing it with a $ZERO charge for 2 years and a new additional HDPVR.

I have been paying these guys about $300 a month in combined services over the last few years, and they didn't want to give that offer up to me without a fight. I think I am at least, a good customer....

Sometimes you just got to ask and whine a little to find out the real deal. Anyway for any Rogers customers reading this, I suggest you get on the phone to your friendly CSR and cry a little for an HDPVR - they are really awesome to have and you actually watch less commercials cause you can zoom right through them, and you will never miss a fav show again.

The Summer Miracle On Ice.

Herb Brooks said to his USA squad before they played the Russians in 1980, "8 times out of 10 they will beat us, but we can beat them just once, this game...."

Looking back at the (sometimes long) summer season, we were never once out-worked, and to me it just showed how everyone on our team really just loves to play hockey. Derek said it to me last February, that we were pretty lucky to get dealt the group of guys we ended up with - he was right. And we made it even better this summer with some key additions.

4-3 win over the Daley Byers.

Q: How satisfying was it to defeat the only team we hadn't beat so far? A: Quite.

True sportsmen the Daley Byers were though in defeat, at the same time recognizing how much audacity and perseverance everyone on the Vikings showed, even when we were down 3-0.

After starting the summer season with a 1-5 record we completely turned it around making sure that everyone knew that if they played us after that, they HAD to play their best. I didn't want to play the Thrashers in the final, I wanted to play the Daley Byers. It was our time to beat them, and I am sure they felt us creeping up on them after the game last week with our short bench. They didn't deserve to win that game, nor did they deserve to win this final game. We did. We won.

Thanks all for a fabulous summer and playoff run.

2-1 win over the Nordiques.

Stay the calm.

We kept our nerve when we had to, and I think they did not, entirely. They took too many rough penalties and that added to our dominance of their zone. It was a relatively easy night for me where only bouncy pucks and weak angles caused us any grief.

Graham and Claude turned this game around for us, where it could have easily been another one of those low scoring losses.

Everyone is doing their job so much better than the start of the season, it is really coming together.

Players cover for rushing defencemen. Our wingers get it in deep from the neutral zone. We are setting up the slot. We are keeping their wingers outside for low percentage plays. We are getting it out of our zone and using the boards better. Our break-out is improving. Our penalties are down. Not much else we can do, except enjoy it and give it our best Monday night. Its been a great summer season either way.

2-0 Loss to Daley Byers.

Surely one of the best games we played all year in dominating zone, out-shooting, out-chancing and absolutely outworking the downtown lawyers. Their big slow goalie, wasn't so slow tonight and combined with some posts, some wide shots, and some unlucky bounces we just couldn't put it behind his frame.

We deserved to win, and because we did that - and executed so well, I came home tonight feeling like I usually do.... after a win. :-)

We had four plumbers on D, and some really hard working forwards while Tony played goal again. Team - we did very, very well and with some more manpower I am convinced we can beat these guys when the chips are down the following week.

The Spirit were eliminated (!!!) so it seems our next opponents will be the Nordiques. I don't want to take this team lightly and hope that everyone brings their top game and work ethic next Sunday because a win then will allow us to go to the final and face the Byers again. I really, really want it...

We CAN win two games in a row, with simple hard work and impassioned high energy. Let's get everybody back, and let's win this thing.

Christian can't make it, but offers some solid advice for us...

Hi Marty,

I never doubted you guys would beat the Growl but it sounds like a great win last week - way to go!

What are the odds that a Monday night league and a Tuesday night league would both schedule Wednesday night games in the same week?! Most unexpected and frustrating that I can't play in both.

If I understand the Rinx league schedule correctly, we (the Vikings) will continue on in the playoffs no matter what happens against Daley Byers on Wednesday, whereas for my other team it's the final game for the league championship - we (the Ice Gators) have been on a great roll in the playoffs (finished the season 8th of 18) and making it to the finals is huge, so I've decided I have to play in that game. If the situations were reversed I would certainly be playing with the Vikings. Hope you guys understand.

Crush the Byers! A team that completely relies on 2 players is a beatable team. I'm no coach but one idea is to try playing their two "stars" the way NHL teams play against dominant players - assign a couple of good skaters as shadows whose only assignment is to stay right on those guys whenever they're on the ice, fight them for every puck, make sure they're not open for passes, etc. Key to making this work is the commitment of the two shadow players to give up on all other aspects of the game and focus only on staying on those guys, but I've certainly seen it work

When their big guns rush the puck the D should not back off them too much - step up and crowd them at our blue line to slow them down and give our wingers a chance to catch up on the backcheck. Those two guys are fast and stick handle well, so D should try not to bite on any moves or play them for the puck in any way, just stay on them and steer them to the outside - let them keep the puck until they're forced to take a wide angle shot or dump it off. Beat those two guys, beat the Byers!

Go Vikings!

Christian

2-0 win over the Growl.

What would have the Habs have been like without the Big 3 of Robinson, Savard and Lapointe? We found out they may still have won but with a lot more work involved. Our wingers showed up big on the boards, rarely giving up loose pucks and opportunities to the Growl who were completely frustrated. Truly a team shut-out this was, and surprising at that, given the Growl have beat us before.

Derek came back to D, as did James, and Shawn saved some his best for last, as sadly the quiet guy who never complained once is leaving for Vancouver next week. Great having you on the team Shawn and we all wish you the best out west.

One of the best executed games we played guys - so thanks all for the extra effort tonight.

5-2 win over the Nordiques.

Graham updates the blog...

For the team blog when you get back: our last game was 5-2 win vs Nordiques, with the last goal coming with 5 seconds left or else it would have been 5-1 (both their goals were in the 3rd period). Tony played great for us in his replacement role even though he was a Nordique himself! Claude came back from his injury to score 2 goals and get three points. Joe matched the feat and Greg and I had 2 points each. On the downside, we gave up a lot of 2 on 1s and I ended up in the penalty box (again). Now for the playoffs!

Btw, Christian won’t be able to make our next game as he’ll be out of town.

Thanks for the update Graham. Great game guys.

5-2 win over the Growl

Well played game guys, but sadly a meaningless game in the standings, but fun nonetheless. I hope the Growl and the Nordiques don't become super motivated and surprise us in the playoffs! I am going to miss the final game of the season, but will be back for playoffs.

5-1 Loss to Daley Byers

I don't think anyone was happy with our performance today, especially me. 2 or 3 I would have stopped on another night for sure. Sadness. The lone highlight was an end to end rush by Christian which saved us from complete embarrassment. We actually had these guys in the first period, then broke down and their big guns walked all over us. Thanks to Enzo for filling in for PaulY.

We sure need a game plan for the next game against these guys, which will likely be in the playoffs. Any suggestions?

5-3 WIN over the Thrashers.

I like the rushing defensemen tactic. Even though our goals against have been creeping up we are 3-1 in our last 4 games!! Christian and Paul were both in deep frequently and it kept a lot of pressure on them, which I think threw them off somewhat.

Really good game from everyone tonight - thanks! This proves we can beat everyone in this league with a full-out effort and a basic game plan.

Monday, July 7, 2008

4-3 loss to the Spirit.

This team is tough to play. They are big and play the points like professionals. I think they are the hardest team we have ever faced, so in saying that, 4-3 is respectable. Refs were def on their side tonight as evidenced by the no-call” concussion hit on Graham.

We can still beat these guys though as two of their goals could have went either way... softies I would really like to have back. I hope we get to ELIMINATE them in the playoffs!!

3-6

BTW: We clinched a playoff spot!!! ;-)

4-2 win over the (defunct) Nordiques.

Really, who would name their team the Nordiques anyway? They deserve to lose. ;-) James played forward, Rob played again, Don came back home to D, Derek sat out again, and Tim not only touched the puck - but put it in the top shelf on the power play like he was Luc Robatialle!! Nice! Also an outstanding end-to-end rush by Christian sealed this game for us...(I am sure I had an assist there!)

The Nordiques also brought out a ringer in #48 (I checked and he wasn't on their previous roster), who showcased his slap shot off the glass several times. Whatever Dude! This game had several penalties on both sides and I think our PK did just fine. They did have a couple of nifty goals, but for the most part we held them to scrambles in front of the net.

I do think that out-working our opponents is beginning to pay off and we are now a respectable 3-5.

Monday, June 23, 2008

5-2 win over The Growl.

Joe, Sarah, Graham, Claude and Christian were helped out by Rob (Jame's friend), Enzo, (Greg and Joe's friend), and Big Eric #5 who joined us again to help out on this night which otherwise would have been a write-off.

An excellent game overall by everyone with only 1 penalty kill necessary. They were only close because of two fluky, bounce-around-pucks in the first period. Our scorers woke up, and although we very short benched, I think we out-skated these guys as well.

Thanks to injured Derek with the bench coach duties too.

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

2-1 Loss to Daley Byers.

Well we improved against this team for sure and held them off for as long as we could. Great D, excellent penalty killing, and shut down their big scorers. Let's look forward to improving on our unjust 1-5 record!!

The Hawks move up!

Hello Vikings,

I noticed that the Hawks have moved up a division.
Our new opposition are the Thrashers with a record of 0-3-1.

Don

Monday, June 9, 2008

2-1 loss to the Hawks

Tight, hard fought game again. This is becoming our schtick! They are a solid team with quality skaters and shooters and yes - they even practice. They also knew what to do on the power play and we gave them 4 chances to do it, which was the difference in the end.

Sarah pops a goal against her former team... awesome!! I can't see any reason why we can't compete with this league for the remainder of the season now.

Fine game guys... we got the D now we need some O.

Marty

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

Its a WIN. 4-3 over The Spirit.

Somehow I think they thought this would be a easy win for them. We ONLY won this game by outworking them and fighting for the puck in their end. The highlight of the game was with a handful of minutes left, we were penalized TWICE on the same play!!! 5 on 3 Uhg!!! And they knew what to do because they did score twice.

That led to a 6 on 5, pulled goalie situation and I remember bodies flying at our blue line trying to keep the puck out. Man I am getting tense just thinking about it!

Great game guys... really nice to win one against one of the top teams.

Marty

Monday, May 26, 2008

Monday May 26 Game - 3rd loss in a row.

2-1 loss against the Nordiques.

Our third game in a row that was well played, esp defensively. A late 6 on 5 push prodced a lot of chances but not the tying goal. Everyone tried their best, very few penalties, and I think we had their zone slightly.

We also have to remember these teams have been together 2 or 3 years and more, while we are still ironing out our wrinkles. Really we have played really well against more experienced teams and I think we will start getting more goals and more points.

On a happier note, our new black jesrseys look great!

Monday, May 12, 2008

Close one, but hard fought.

The Growl are def a team we can beat, but I think our short line-up really hurt us. Everyone tried really hard and in a 1-0 loss, and games like that can go either way. One or two more players and I think we take that team. Given that, we out-chanced and out-worked them with many shots going wide or deflecting, and a nifty deke by Joe that went off the post.

I think we can compete in this league. Thanks to all who made it out to this god-awful start-time.

Marty

Summer season.

Yes its underway and apparently lawyers can skate too! Daley Byers beat us 4-2 and although we held our own, we still have to find a way to score more against over-sized goalies!

Anyway sorry about the couple of softies, as I mentioned I don't think I will be stealing any games for the team this summer. The good thing about the game was that our opponents were very friendly and didn't seem to have any goon squad morons... what a relief. In that sense, a fun game that we kept close. Our new additions did well too!

Derek couldn't play because his ass was sore... (I didn't ask anything else...) but he helped on the bench - thanks! We really should look for someone to do that full time.

Donny wants to play forward so we are looking for some volunteers to try D.... (don't make us force you... ;-)

New jerseys should be here in a couple weeks.

New Vikings Jersey

I don't know if any of you were aware, but we have to get visiting jerseys for the summer league. After pricing out even the cheapest ones in bulk with a number, James and I figured that we should get an order in for some real jerseys, as the difference was only another 20 or 25 bucks anyhow. The guys at bigstick have this great "bruins" like jersey (sorry about the habs Joe!!) that we chose, so everyone is getting a new jersey with this awesome new crest they are taking of as well.

As you can see, this is much better than our TN jerseys and will probably become our every game jerseys save for a conflict.

Here is even better news. For players returning from the winter team, the $300 is going to cover the cost of the jersey or very close to it after I work out the numbers. New players being added may have to pay a minimal extra amount for the second jersey.

The jerseys are going to be ready in 4 weeks.

The Tournament.

A hard fought weekend to be sure and 2-2 is respectable, but it is still kind of disappointing to lose against the Rampage Retards. I don't know about you guys but my body is feeling it all today. Well get some rest everyone because we are going to be back at this sooner than you think.

Like Captain James said, we had a great season and we all worked really hard and did our best right to the end. Let's take that and be happy with it.

Welcome to the Vikings Blog.

This blog is open for comments.

Okay guys (and gals) this might be a good communication centre for us, I just don`t know but probably worth a try. It`s just with all the emails going back and forth, it might be a good thing to check in here for the absolute latest information on winter and summer league teams. This can be anything you want it to be. Post game times, schedules, jokes, critics corner, off season banter, travel expeditions, personal notes....whatever, whatever.

I know I will be using it to keep our roster up to date for the summer team, and then we shall see from there.

Note: I am not sure, but you may have to sign up for a gmail email account before you post here.
